WRITING: A TOOL FOR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT (WID 001)

Writing is as old as man. Scriptures, heritages and histories have all been passed from one generation to the other through the powerful influence of writing. Of all the four communication skills, writing is the most important because it is immortal

The last few generations probably couldn't invest a lot in this unique medium of communication since technology is largely in coma. The burden of transportation and the stress attached to compiling long books further compound this problem.
But things changed dramatically forever over the last 100years.
Today, the world is connected; posts travel at the speed of light and generally assume their own life cycle. The modern world has seen us invest more in writing because the world is hungry and is yet to be satiated.

Call it Business Writing in form of Resume and CV, memo, proposal and report; or Creative Writing in form of fictions and short stories or other forms as we will come to know; the main thing is that people write everyday and are investing a lot into it.
Writing is independent of your area of specialisation. So far you want to sell your products and services to people, communicate with others, or enquire about the latest trends, all will require you to write steadily or hire someone to do it on your behalf

Blogging has pushed many into having a share on the virtual world. Doctors, lawyer, and what have you now blog due to several reasons.
You have seen presidents and prominent people having vivid presence on social media like Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn (I believe Facebook is fast exhausting its usefulness since it is now being precipitated by few sane people).
Do you think they have such time amidst their clumsy schedule? What they do is simply hire a social media manager to do the work.

You send messages to sites and companies frequently. You may even think you're talking directly to the CEO because you have his or her contact. You may also wonder why those replies are fast and consistent. It is not a surprise. Someone earns a living by doing that.

I stumbled on a survey recently about the time an average American spend in traffic jams annually. The stat is jaw dropping.
People now prefer to work at home as there are many opportunities that afford such. What you require are just stable light, connection and a laptop.
But how will you qualify for any of these when you are not fortified? How do you do copy writing, content writing or email marketing when you can't write comfortably? How will you carve out an amazing CV or create a unique cover letter if you can't put your thoughts on paper?

These are some of the writing jobs that are paying well. You may then say to yourself: "but these jobs are very competitive and so so who has all the skills couldn't land a job or make 'big money." Yes! You're right.
Freelancing is a very competitive yet lucrative work. We are however saying all these so you know what is waiting for you or what you may be missing.
We are not saying everyone should try to fit into such highly competitive space, but we are saying you stand a better chance in your workplace, environment, and withing your peers when your  writing skills are excellent.

So concentrate on perfecting your writing and you see many opportunities waiting for you. Your boss will entrust you with extra assignment, sell you to the world as a unique member or the company or send you out to accession if your writing prowess surpass that of your peers

People will also vow for you and suggest you for amazing jobs. A brother and friend here (may Allah reward him abundantly) landed a job for me earlier this year. Even though it wouldn't last long, but I learned, earned and networked with great minds. He wouldn't have suggested me if he hadn't trusted me. Also, I am a botanist but where I work today is far from my course of study. So you can do it and the only person stopping you from that feat is you.

Tips on how to improve your writing

Attend seminars
Read books
Write often
Network with experts
Give experts your write ups for improvement

Stay wise and Keep learning.
